Fear of the dentist is very common. We know that the idea of what you might experience in the dental chair causes a lot of anxiety for some people. Other people might fear the dentist because they know they have an issue with a sensitive gag reflex or difficulties in becoming numb.
Whatever the reason, we understand that it can be nerve-wracking to undergo dental procedures. There’s the potential for pain and discomfort, and it can also be difficult just to sit still for that long. Luckily, modern dentistry – and your friends at Lewisporte Dental Clinic! - can offer some options for the ultimate in comfort and convenience.
With sedation dentistry, you can breeze through your appointment with a deeper level of pain relief and comfort. Most patients feel nothing but rested and relaxed. With a few precautions (such as choosing the right level of sedation for you, and making certain you have a ride home and some company afterwards), you’ll be well on your way to a safe and easy dental visit.
We offer three levels of sedation. The first is conscious sedation, which is nothing more than a prescribed oral medication (normally 1 or 2 pills) which you’ll take before coming to your appointment. The medication will relax you and help you let go of your anxiety.
The second level is nitrous oxide sedation. Nitrous oxide is also known as laughing gas because of the feelings of giddiness and relaxation it produces. When you inhale this odourless gas, it eases anxiety and also gives some level of pain relief. This helps tremendously for patients with a lot of fear of the dentist.
The third, and deepest, level of sedation is general anesthesia, is performed at the hospital by our dentists. With general anesthesia, the patient sleeps through the entirety of the procedure.
